How Tap Tempo Works
When you tap the button (or press spacebar) in rhythm with music, the calculator records the time between each tap in milliseconds. It then averages all the intervals and uses the formula: BPM = 60,000 ÷ average interval (ms).
For example, if your average interval is 500 ms, the BPM is 60,000 ÷ 500 = 120 BPM.
The more you tap, the more accurate the average becomes. With 8 taps, one mistimed tap only affects the result by ~12.5%. The confidence score tracks how stable your tapping is—higher is better. After 8 taps, the algorithm uses a rolling window of the last 8 intervals, filtering out outliers for accuracy within ±1–2 BPM.

The Tap Tempo Algorithm
When you tap, the calculator records the exact timestamp (in milliseconds) of each tap. It then calculates the time intervals between consecutive taps. For example:
- Tap 1 at 0 ms
- Tap 2 at 500 ms (interval = 500 ms)
- Tap 3 at 1000 ms (interval = 500 ms)
- Tap 4 at 1500 ms (interval = 500 ms)
Average interval: (500 + 500 + 500) ÷ 3 = 500 ms
BPM: 60,000 ÷ 500 = 120 BPM
The formula is universal: BPM = 60,000 ÷ average interval (ms). More taps reduce the impact of single mistaps. With two taps, one mistimed tap skews the result by 50%. With eight taps, one mistap only affects the result by ~12.5%. This is why the calculator shows a confidence score that improves as you tap more.

How to Get Accurate Results
Find the kick drum: Listen for the primary rhythmic pulse, usually the bass drum or kick. Ignore syncopation, hi-hats, or clapping—focus on the downbeat. In most music, the kick marks the main pulse.
Tap at least 4 times: Single mistaps have proportionally less impact with more data. Four taps is the bare minimum; eight taps is optimal for precision. Aim for 8–12 taps in critical situations.
Use spacebar instead of clicking: Keyboard input is more consistent than mouse clicks. Pressing spacebar offers faster, more precise input than tapping a button.

Understanding the Results
BPM: The calculated tempo in beats per minute. This is the primary result you’re after.
Taps: How many times you’ve tapped. Higher tap counts increase accuracy and confidence.
Confidence: Percentage based on tap count. More taps = higher confidence. Aim for 80%+ before relying on the result.
